2017 AAOS Annual Meeting: Effectiveness of Intra-articular Local Infiltration Analgesia Compared to Interscalene Block in the Early Postoperative Pain Control after Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Comparative Randomized Non-inferiority Trial

OE Journal. 2017;5(7):1999 patients scheduled for total shoulder arthroplasty were randomized to postoperative analgesia with either local infiltration analgesia or a continuous interscalene block for 48 hours postoperatively. Patients were assessed for perioperative pain and opioid consumption, as well as functional outcome at 1-month follow-up. Within the recovery room, LIA demonstrated significantly lower pain scores and opioid consumption compared to the ISB group; differences between groups were non-significant after 48 hours.
