2014 AAOS Annual Meeting: Weighted versus Uniform Dose of Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial

OE Journal. 2014;2(6):250 patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a uniform 1-gram dose or a weighted 20 mg/kg dose of intravenous tranexamic acid. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a uniform dose would be more effective than a weighted dose, with respect to postoperative blood loss and hemoglobin levels. Results indicated that intraoperative, postoperative, and total blood loss were not significantly different between treatment groups, suggesting that the treatments were equally effective.
