rhBMP-2 in Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial
40 patients scheduled to undergo posterior lumbar interbody fusion with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) were randomized to receive either rhBMP-2 or autologous bone filling. After 2 years of follow up, no significant differences were found between the two groups in regards in the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), the Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and Visual Analog Scores. However, patients receiving rhBMP had significantly lower Bridging Trabecular Bone Scale Scores and bone density measures at 2 year follow-up.
