2014 AAOS Annual Meeting: Risk of Re-injury at Two Years: A Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Three Graft Types for ACL Reconstruction

OE Journal. 2014;2(6):52330 patients scheduled for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were randomized to undergo surgery using either a patellar tendon autograft, quadruple-stranded hamstring tendon autograft, or double-bundle reconstruction with hamstring tendons. The purpose was to evaluate each with respect to disease-specific ACL quality of life, and identify any possible predictors of traumatic re-rupture, traumatic re-injury, and atraumatic graft failure. The results after 2 years indicated that quality of life was similar among all treatments, with age and Tegner activity level significant predictors of traumatic re-rupture and re-injury, but not atraumatic graft failure. Reconstruction with patellar tendons was associated with the lowest rate of traumatic re-rupture and re-injury.
