2026 AAOS Annual Meeting: Creatine- And HMB-Enriched Protein Supplementation For Hip Fracture Recovery In Elderly Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

OE Journal. 2026;14(5):3380 geriatric patients who underwent surgery for a proximal femoral fracture were randomized to receive creatine- and HMB-enriched whey supplementation or placebo supplementation with maltodextrin. The primary outcome of interest was functional recovery at 1 month, measured with the Parker Mobility Score (PMS). Secondary outcomes included nutritional markers, mortality rates, and post-operative complications, measured up to 6 months post-operation. The results of this study revealed significantly better mobility recovery (p<0.001), a lower risk of mortality (p=0.034), and greater correction of albumin (p=0.044) in patients who received supplementation.
