2024 AAOS Annual Meeting: Opioid-sparing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs protocol in patient undergoing intramedullary nailing of tibial shaft fractures: a randomized controlled trial

OE Journal. 2024;12(4):4596 patients undergoing intramedullary nailing for tibial shaft fractures were randomized to receive either a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) protocol (n=52) or opioid-based pain control (n=44). The primary outcomes of interest included postoperative pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and opioid consumption measured in Morphine Milligram Equivalents (MMEs). The results showed a significant decrease in opioid consumption in the NSAID group compared to the opioid group. However, the VAS scores were not significantly different, indicating that pain management was comparable between the groups. The length of hospital stay was similar for both groups.
