2022 AAOS Annual Meeting: Transmuscular Quadratus Lumborum Block Does Not Provide Any Benefit for Primary Hip Arthroscopy

One hundred and two patients undergoing hip arthroscopy were randomized to receive a transmuscular quadratus lumborum block (TQLB, n=51) with pericapsular injection or pericapsular injection alone (n=51). The primary outcomes of interest was the numerical rating scale (NRS). Secondary outcomes of interest included opioid utilization in the PACU, PACU recovery time, quadriceps strength and adverse events. There was no significant difference in initial PACU pain scores between groups. Similarly, PACU opioid consumption, total time spent in the PACU and quadriceps strength was similar between groups. No differences in adverse events were noted.
