2016 AAOS Annual Meeting: Tranexamic Acid Reduces Postoperative Morbidity in Patients Undergoing Foot and Ankle Surgery

OE Journal. 2016;4(5):25100 patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery were randomized to either administration of tranexamic acid (TXA), or a control group without TXA administration. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of TXA was associated with reductions in perioperative morbidity in foot and ankle procedures. Findings indicated significantly decreased ecchymosis, edema, erythema, and bleeding in patients who received TXA compared to individuals who did not. Pain, swelling, and blood loss was also significantly reduced in the TXA group after 2 and 6 postoperative weeks.
