2-week vs. 6-week Postoperative Restrictions Following Lumbar Discectomy: A Prospective Randomized Control Study
109 patients who underwent lumbar discectomy were included in the study and randomized to undergo either a 2 or 6-week motion restriction program postoperatively. The program restricted performing bending, lifting, or twisting tasks and the varying program lengths were implemented in order to determine if they had an effect on the rate of re-herniation. The results indicated that the incidence of re-herniation was comparable between groups; this suggests that patients may be permitted to return to normal activity earlier than previously believed following lumber discectomy.
