Short versus Long Intramedullary Nail Fixation for Treatment of Unstable Intertrochanteric Hip Fractures
40 patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures were randomized to fixation with either a short intramedullary nail (IMN) or long IMN. The purpose of this study was to compare the two methods in terms of estimated blood loss, operative time, transfusion rate, and occurrence of complications or revisions. Findings indicated significantly lower estimated blood loss and shorter operatve time for short IMN compared to long IMN. Results also suggested more late complications and incidence of revision surgery in the short IMN group compared to the long IMN group.
