2016 AAOS Annual Meeting: Influence of Fixation Type on Stability and Bone Mineral Density around Tibial Component in Total Knee Replacement

84 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to either cemented or uncemented tibial component fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare fixation types based on tibial component stability (migration and rotation), periprosthetic bone mineral density, and subjective clinical outcome scores. Outcomes were assessed at 3 and 12 months postoperatively. Cemented fixation was noted for significantly lower tibial component subsidence compared to the uncemented fixation over the first year postoperatively. A significant difference between groups in tibial retroversion was also noted. no significant between-group differences were reported for outcomes related to periprosthetic bone mineral density or subjective clinical outcome scores.
