Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound in Acute Tibial Shaft Fractures Treated with IM Nails: The Results of the TRUST Trial
501 patients with tibial shaft fractures who underwent fracture fixation with an intramedullary nail were included in this trial. Patients were randomized to receive low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) or sham treatment to evaluate the effect of LIPUS on time to union and functional outcomes. The results of this trial over a one year period indicated that there were no differences between LIPUS and sham-treated patients in the time to union. Additionally, there were no differences in functional outcomes between the two groups.
