Preoperative Intravenous Dexamethasone Reduced Pain after Total Knee Arthroplasty
72 patients who had undergone unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were randomized to either 0.15mg/kg of intravenous dexamethasone, or normal saline preoperatively. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an intermediate dose of dexamethasone to mitigate postoperative pain and symptoms. Findings indicated significant reduction in pain, and significantly lower rates of nausea and vomiting after preoperative intravenous dexamethasone compared to the placebo group. Functional outcomes, morphine consumption, and use of anti-emetic drugs were similar between groups.
