AAOS 2016: Comparison of pain and patient satisfaction between outpatient vs inpatient THA .
A Multi-Center, Prospective, Randomized Study of Outpatient versus Inpatient Total Hip Arthroplasty
209 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to be discharged either within 12 hours of their procedure (outpatient group), or after an overnight stay (inpatient group). The study was conducted in order to compare patient satisfaction and pain levels. Complications and number of unplanned follow-up visits were also monitored. Findings indication that while satisfaction levels were significantly higher in outpatients, pain levels on the first postoperative day were as well. All other outcomes were comparable between groups.
