2016 AAOS Annual Meeting: Arthroscopic Capsular Release versus Manipulation under Anaesthesia in the Management of Adhesive Capsulitis

60 shoulders in 53 patients with adhesive capsulitis unresponsive to conservative therapy were randomised to operative management through either arthroscopic capsular release or manipulation under anaesthesia. Outcomes included range of motion in forward flexion, abduction, external rotation, and internal rotation, as well as patient-reported pain and function. Results demonstrated significantly greater forward flexion and internal rotation in the arthroscopy group compared to the manipulation group at 3-month follow-up; though no significant differences in any motion at any other time point were observed. Pain scores and Constant scores also did not significantly differ between groups at any time point.
