2015 AAOS Annual Meeting: Intravenous or Intra-articular Tranexamic Acid in Total Knee Arthroplasty

150 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty with tourniquet application were randomized to receive tranexamic acid either intravenously or intra-articularly. The purpose of this trial was to compare the safety and effectiveness of the two administration techniques. Drain output, limb swelling, total blood loss, and incidence of complications were evaluated up to 4 days postoperatively. The results demonstrated comparable outcomes between the two modes of administration, with no significant differences in any of the measured variables.
