The relationship between polyethylene wear and peri-prosthetic osteolysis in THA - A 12-year RCT
53 patients (54 hips) scheduled for total hip arthroplasty were randomized to either a highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liner. A total of 25 patients (11 HXLPE; 14 UHMWPE) were available at a minimum of 12 year follow-up. Computed tomography (CT) was used to assess incidence and volume of osteolysis, and radiostereometric analysis (RSA) data from 10-year follow-up wear evaluated in tandem. The UHMWPE group displayed a significantly higher incidence of osteolysis (7/14; 50%) when compared to the HXLPE group (1/11; 9%), along with a significantly greater wear rate. Volume of osteolysis was not found to correlate with wear rate.
