2023 AAHKS Annual Meeting: The Use of the Barbed Suture Provides High Scar Satisfaction After Total Knee Arthroplasty

OE Journal. 2023;11(21):9133 knees (102 patients) undergoing total knee arthroplasty for knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either subcuticular skin closure by continuous intradermal suture using a monofilament barbed suture or a single-stitched interrupted suture using a polyfilament suture. The primary outcome of interest was the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale 2.0 (POSAS) scores at 1-year follow-up. The POSAS assessment is composed of the Observer Scale (OSAS) and the Patient Scale (PSAS). The results of this trial showed that the barbed suture provided higher scar satisfaction after one year compared to interrupted sutures.
