A modified suture technique using polydioxanone (PDS II) for capsule closure in total knee arthroplasty: a prospective randomized study compared with traditional suture technique.

One hundred five patients with end-stage osteoarthritis were randomized to receive total knee arthroplasty with either a modified suture technique using polydioxanone (PDS II) (n=53) or a traditional suture technique (n=52) for capsule closure. The primary outcome was the time required for capsule suturing. Secondary outcomes included water tightness, wound seepage, suture rupture, and length of hospitalization. Outcomes were assessed postoperatively during the inpatient stay. Overall, the results of the study revealed that the modified technique significantly reduced suturing time, improved water tightness, reduced wound seepage, and shortened hospitalization. These findings suggest that the modified suture method using PDS II offers clinical benefits in TKA wound closure.
