No clinical difference between large metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty and 28-mm-head total hip arthroplasty?
Int Orthop. 2011 Dec;35(12):1771-6. Epub 2011 Mar 450 patients scheduled to undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive either a large (mean 48-mm) metal-on-metal or a 28-mm metal-on-polyethylene prosthesis. A larger prosthesis has been proposed to provide a greater range of motion at the hip for patients undergoing THA. The results from this study indicate that at one year follow-up both prostheses provided significant improvements in Harris Hip Scores. However, there were no significant differences in the hip range of motion between the two groups.
