The Comparison of Local Infiltration Analgesia with Peripheral Nerve Block following Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA): A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
J Arthroplasty. 2015 Sep;30(9):1664-71.8 randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) and peripheral nerve blocks (PNB) in patients receiving total knee arthroplasty were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The purpose was to compare NRS pain scores, morphine consumption, range of motion, and incidence of adverse effects between groups to determine if LIA treatment provided any additional risks or benefits for postoperative care, when compared to PNB. The LIA group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in pain at rest compared to PNB, but no significant differences between groups were noted for range of motion, morphine consumption or risk of adverse effects.
