2017 ISAKOS Congress : Intra-articular injection of tranexamic acid for reducing postoperative hemarthrosis in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

300 patients scheduled for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were randomized to either a topical tranexamic acid administration group or control group. Patients were assessed for postoperative blood loss to intraarticular drainage after 24 hours, as well as clinical outcome scores at 5 days and 4 weeks postoperatively. Blood loss results demonstrated a statistically significant, approximately 25mL reduction, in postoperative drainage volume after 24 hours in the topical TXA group compared to the control group. Pain was reduced at 5 days in the TXA group compared to the control group, however, clinical scores at 4 weeks did not significantly differ between groups.
