Postoperative Care Navigation for Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

308 patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty were randomized to one of two postoperative rehabilitation protocols: one group received motivational interviewing over the first 6 months after surgery as part of an enhanced management protocol in addition to usual care, whereas the second group received usual care alone, consisting of standard inpatient and outpatient physical therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine if the enhanced care protocol offered a significant benefit regarding improvement in functional outcome over the first 6 months. Results demonstrated no significant difference between groups in the improvement in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) function scores over the first 6 months, nor in the improvement in WOMAC pain scores, ability to achieve full extension and 120 degrees flexion range of motion, or percentage of patients expressing high satisfaction with outcome.
