OE Journal. 2016;4(18):27 Bone Joint J. 2016 Jun;98-B(6):747-5375 patients with an unstable, extracapsular trochanteric hip fracture scheduled for intramedullary nail fixation were randomized to the procedure with and without the intravenous administration of tranexamic acid (TXA); the control group was instead treated with placebo saline. The purpose of this study was to determine if TXA was effective in reducing blood loss and transfusion rate in these patients. The results indicated that despite significantly lower blood loss observed in the TXA group, no significant difference between groups was observed in transfusion rate.
