2016 OARSI World Congress on Osteoarthritis: The two-year efficacy of 12-weeks non-surgical treatment for patients not eligible for total knee replacement - a pre-defined analysis from a randomized controlled trial

100 patients with knee osteoarthritis ineligible for total knee replacement were randomized to receive either a 12-week MEDIC physiotherapy program (consisting of neuromuscular exercise, education, diet, insoles and pain medication) or standard care. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the MEDIC physiotherapy program was associated with significantly improved knee function, pain, symptoms, and quality of life when assessed after a long-term follow-up of 2 years. Results demonstrated significantly superior KOOS function outcomes for patients in the MEDIC therapy group, however, all other outcomes of interest were comparable.
