Hemiarthroplasty versus internal fixation for displaced intracapsular fractures of the hip in elderly men: a pilot randomised trial

OE Journal. 2015;3(19):19 Bone Joint J. 2015 Jul;97-B(7):992-656 men (62-94 years of age) with an intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck were randomized to treatment with either hemiarthroplasty or internal fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare the two treatment options over 1 year postoperatively in a cohort of elderly males. Despite no significant differences being detected in mobility or social dependence between the two groups, internal fixation was associated with significantly higher pain throughout the postoperative period, as well as a higher incidence of reoperation.
