Role of anti-oxidant (vitamin-C) in post-operative pain relief in foot and ankle trauma surgery: A prospective randomized trial

60 patients undergoing foot or ankle trauma surgery were randomized to receive 6 weeks of post-operative vitamin C supplementation or placebo. Outcomes of interest included pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at post-operative weeks 1, 2 and 6, total analgesic consumption in the first 6 post-operative weeks, and the Foot and Ankle Instrument (FAI) outcome at 3 months post-operation. The results of the study revealed significantly favourable pain scores at 2 and 6 weeks, lower analgesic consumption and favourable FAI scores in the vitamin C group compared to the placebo group.
