New treatment of lumbar disc herniation involving 5-hydroxytryptamine2A receptor inhibitor: a randomized controlled trial
J Neurosurg Spine. 2005 Apr;2(4):441-6Forty patients with sciatica due to L4-5 or L5-S1 disc herniation were randomized to receive treatment with the 5-HT2A inhibitor or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, both groups demonstrated significant reductions in low-back and leg pain as well as leg numbness, but there was no significant difference between the two groups for any of these outcomes. Over 1 year, 50% of the 5-HT group and 15% of the NSAID group did not require further intervention after the two week drug regimen.
