Dr. Oddsson speaks about the possible benefits of balance training program for the elderly.
66 elderly-community dwelling-individuals were randomized to determine the effect of a specific balance training program on voluntary step execution and postural control. Subjects were allocated to undergo either a 12 week specific exercise program with 2 sessions per week or no intervention. The results at the end of the intervention phase indicated that the group who performed the training program had faster step execution, lower transition displacement, and improvement self-reported lower extremity function compared to those who did not receive any intervention. However, these beneficial effects were lost at the 6 month follow-up.
