Initiation of osteoporosis assessment in the fracture clinic results in improved osteoporosis management: a randomised controlled trial

The management of osteoporosis following a fragility fracture has traditionally been deficient. This study compared the assessment and treatment rates of two different models of screening for osteoporosis following fragility fracture. 66 patients were randomized to either the intervention group, assessment for osteoporosis that was initiated in the fracture clinic, or to the control group, where the assessment was initiated by the participant's general practitioner. The follow-up at 3 months revealed that the assessment rate was significantly better in patients who were referred by the fracture clinic; however, the treatment rates were similar between the two groups.
