Arm position during extracorporeal shock wave therapy for calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder: a randomized study

35 patients with calcifying tendinitis in the shoulder were randomized to undergo extracorporeal shock wave therapy using either the neutral position technique, or the hyperextended internal rotation technique, to determine whether shoulder position influenced the outcomes. Following assessments over a 3 month period, the results displayed that patients who underwent extracorporeal shock wave therapy using the hyperextended internal rotation technique were more likely to experience resorption of the calcific deposit.
