Anterior cervical fusion with interbody cage containing b-tricalcium phosphate augmented with plate fixation: A prospective randomized study with 2-year follow-up

62 patients with cervical radiculopathy and/or myelopathy due to soft disc herniation or spondylosis were treated with one or two level discectomy and fusion with interbody cages containing B-TCP. They were randomized to supplemental anterior plate fusion or no supplemental fusion. B-TCP containing interbody fusion cage was found to be a safe and effective treatment for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy and/or myelopathy. Furthermore, supplementation with anterior plate fixation lead to improved fusion rate and prevented cage subsidence, this however did not translate into improved 2-year clinical outcomes.
