Evaluation of the scapulohumeral distraction technique for anterior shoulder dislocation: a randomized controlled trial.

Eighty-seven patients with acute anterior shoulder dislocation were randomized to receive either the scapulohumeral distraction (SHD) technique (n=43) or the Hippocratic technique (HT) (n=44). The primary outcome of interest was the success rate of shoulder reduction. Secondary outcomes included procedure time, pain level during the reduction attempt, patient satisfaction, and the occurrence of complications over a one-month follow-up. Overall, the results revealed that while the success rates between SHD (95.3%) and HT (93.2%) were comparable, SHD resulted in significantly shorter reduction time, lower pain scores ), and higher patient satisfaction. No complications were observed in either group. These findings suggest that SHD is a safe, efficient, and well-tolerated alternative to HT for shoulder reduction.
