Efficacy and safety of topical capsaicin in the treatment of osteoarthritis pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eight double-blind randomized controlled trials involving 498 patients with osteoarthritis were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing topical capsaicin to placebo. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain intensity, physician's global evaluation, joint stiffness, and adverse effects. Capsaicin significantly reduced pain intensity but was associated with a higher incidence of burning sensation at the application site.
