Effect of barbed versus standard sutures on wound complications in total knee arthroplasty: A meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis included 8 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 1569 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. The comparison was between the use of barbed sutures and traditional sutures for wound closure. Pooled outcomes of interest included the incidence of superficial wound infection, wound dehiscence, and wound suture abscesses. The pooled results indicated no significant difference in the risk of superficial wound infection, wound dehiscence, or wound suture abscesses between the two groups. Therefore, barbed sutures can be considered a safe alternative to traditional sutures for wound closure in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty.
