Effectiveness of ultrasound guided dry needling in management of jumper's knee: a randomized controlled trial.

Ninety-six patients with jumper's knee (patellar tendinopathy) were randomized to either receive either ultrasound-guided dry needling in combination with physical therapy (n=48) or physical therapy alone (n=48). The primary outcome of interest was pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes included the Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment (VISA-P) score, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Lysholm knee score, tendon thickness, echogenicity, and neovascularization scores all measured after 4 weeks. Ultrasound-guided dry needling in combination with physical therapy had better outcomes after 4 weeks when comparing pain, VISA-P, KOOS, Lysholm scores, and tendon thickness.
