Patellar resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty leads to better isokinetic performance.

Fifty patients undergoing a unilateral, primary total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive patellar resurfacing (n=25) or no patellar resurfacing (n=25). The primary outcome of interest was isokinetic performance, as measured by knee flexion and extension torque scores, up to 12 months post-operation. Additional outcomes of interest included the Knee Society Score [KSS], range of motion, operative time and blood loss, post-operative complications, and hip-knee angle. The results revealed that patellar resurfacing resulted in superior peak knee extensor torque at 6 and 12 months post-operation compared to the no resurfacing group. No other differences were observed between the groups.
