Randomized, controlled trial of two tranexamic acid dosing protocols in adult spinal deformity surgery

Fifty-two adults undergoing multi-level fusion surgery for adult spinal deformity were randomized to receive a high-dose tranexamic acid regimen (n=25) or a low-dose tranexamic acid regimen (n=27) for the minimization of blood loss. Outcomes of interest included estimated blood loss, blood loss as a percentage of body volume, transfusion volume, and length of stay, and the incidence of complications. The results of this study demonstrated that a high-dose regimen did not significantly differ in all outcomes, with the exception of estimated blood loss by percentage of total body volume.
