Early Intervention of Perioperative Delirium in Older Patients (>60 years) with Hip Fracture: A Randomized Controlled Study

One hundred and twenty-eight patients with isolated hip fractures were randomized to receive either comprehensive orthopedic care (n=63) or conventional orthopedic care (n=65). In addition to routine care, patients in the comprehensive orthopedic care group received preoperative psychological counseling and self-hypnosis. The primary outcomes of this trial were to assess the effects of an early intervention of risperidone, psychological counseling, and self-hypnosis on the incidence, severity, and outcomes of perioperative delirium using the Delirium Rating Scale (DRS-R-98). Post-operative outcomes such as hospital stay, infection, mortality, and lower extremity thrombosis were also recorded. The results of this trial found the duration, severity, and incidence of delirium to be significantly in favor of the comprehensive orthopedic care group vs. the conventional orthopedic care group. The hospitalization rate was also significantly lower in the comprehensive orthopedic care group.
