The results of the current study suggest that intraoperative release of the suprascapular nerve does not provide any anatomic or functional benefit in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair for large and massive tears. This study was limited by its small sample size and single centre design.

Forty two patients with large or massive reparable rotator cuff tears (RTC) and suprascapular nerve neuropathy were randomized to undergo arthroscopic RTC repair with suprascapular nerve release (n=21) or RTC repair alone (n=21). The primary outcome of interest was full suprascapular nerve recovery measured through electrophysiologic changes. Secondary outcomes of interest were functional outcomes and RTC composition postoperatively. There was no difference in the proportion of patients who had full suprascapular nerve recovery at 6 or 12 months postoperatively. Similarly there were no differences between groups in functional outcome scores or the composition of the RTC at final follow-up.
