Effect of high-dose preoperative methylprednisolone on recovery after total hip arthroplasty: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Br J Anaesth. 2013 Jan;110(1):66-73. doi: 10.1093/bja/aes345. Epub 2012 Sep 1748 patients were randomized to determine the effects of glucocorticoid prophylaxis on the length-to-discharge following total hip arthroplasty. Patients received either a single dose of 125mg methylprednisolone or isotonic saline (placebo) in addition to a multimodal oral analgesic protocol. The results indicated that despite improved immediate post-operative pain and inflammatory response, there was no difference in the time to reach discharge requirements between groups.
