Tranexamic Acid for Blood Loss after Transforaminal Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Study.

Forty patients undergoing transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion were randomized into receiving tranexamic acid or a placebo. Outcomes of interest included blood loss, postoperative drainage volume, time to drainage removal, time to ambulation, length of hospital stay, hemoglobin (Hb) levels post-operation, and the incidence of adverse events. Results demonstrated that intraoperative blood loss was significantly in favour of the TXA group, as well as time to ambulation. No significant differences between the TXA and control groups were observed in postoperative drainage, time to drainage removal, length of hospital stay post-operation, post-operative hemoglobin levels, or the incidence of adverse events.
