Cemented or Uncemented Hemiarthroplasty for Intracapsular Hip Fracture

The results of this study suggest that in the first 12 months post-operation, cemented hemiarthroplasty offers a modest, but significantly improved quality of life with a lower risk of periprosthetic fracture compared to uncemented hemiarthroplasty.
Study Summary
1225 elderly patients with displaced intracapsular hip fractures were included in this multicentered, randomized controlled trial comparing cemented hemiarthroplasty and uncemented hemiarthroplasty. The primary outcome of interest was health-related quality of life at 4 months, measured with the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) instrument. Secondary outcomes of interest included EQ-5D scores at 1 and 12 months, the incidence of complications, mobility status, and residential status on hospital discharge. The results revealed significantly better health-related quality of life at 4 months in the cemented hemiarthroplasty group. Moreover, the odds of periprosthetic fracture was significantly higher in the uncemented hemiarthroplasty group.
