Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Versus Corticosteroid Injection for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of pain and disability, especially among older adults. While corticosteroid injections remain a commonly used short-term treatment, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has emerged as a biologic alternative with growing clinical interest. A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing PRP and corticosteroid intra-articular injections is examined, as well as their impact on pain, function, and safety across multiple time points, with subgroup analyses by PRP dose and exploration of ongoing global trials. Overall, PRP may offer slight short- to mid-term benefits, but the quality of evidence remains low and further high-quality trials are needed.
