High Blood Pressure May Accelerate Osteoarthritis Through a Newly Identified Hormonal Pathway .
Could hypertension directly accelerate cartilage degeneration? An investigation involving 36820 Korean adults, human cartilage samples and experimental models identified a potential biological connection between elevated blood pressure and osteoarthritis progression. Researchers found that hypertension activates vasopressin signaling through the AVPR1A receptor, promoting cartilage breakdown while suppressing repair mechanisms. Blocking this pathway prevented accelerated joint degeneration in mice. The findings suggest a potential therapeutic target for patients with concurrent hypertension and osteoarthritis, although clinical validation remains necessary. Medical Xpress
