Platelet-rich plasma shows limited evidence of structural benefits in knee osteoarthritis .

Can platelet-rich plasma injections slow structural joint deterioration, rather than simply relieve symptoms? A systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials involving 1200 patients found limited and inconsistent evidence of structural improvements following platelet-rich plasma treatment for knee osteoarthritis. Although some studies reported favourable imaging outcomes, pooled findings did not establish reliable cartilage preservation or disease modification. The results highlight the distinction between symptomatic improvement and structural regeneration, reinforcing the need for standardized formulations and longer-term imaging assessments.
