Robotic-Assisted Lumbar Fusion Associated With Lower Postoperative Opioid Use .
Could robotic guidance reduce opioid requirements after spinal fusion? Research presented by Hospital for Special Surgery at the North American Spine Society meeting compared 804 patients undergoing minimally invasive lumbar fusion. Robotic-assisted procedures were associated with 16% lower in-hospital opioid consumption, 21% lower use during the first 24 hours and a 57% lower likelihood of requiring patient-controlled analgesia. Complication rates and hospital stays were comparable. These observational findings suggest potential benefits beyond implant placement accuracy, but prospective randomized trials are needed to establish causality.
