ORIGINAL ANALYSIS

Why it’s important to consider individual treatment characteristics in the evaluation of their therapeutic effect

Numerous treatment options may exist for a given condition. Some of these interventions may fall under the same class of treatment (e.g. nonoperative, oral anti-inflammatory drugs, injections, etc.), but it is important to remember that not all treatments are the same, differing in characteristics such as their route of administration, biological rationale, method of preparation, molecular composition, dosage, timing of administration, and duration of treatment. In addition, a number of different manufacturers may develop their own variation of a given therapy. In this week’s OE Original, we highlight an example of why it’s important to consider and evaluate the impact different treatment characteristics can have on clinical outcomes.
