Preoperative Single-Dose Intravenous Administration of Tranexamic Acid in Hip Fracture Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Perioperative blood loss in hip fracture surgery is a major clinical challenge, often linked to anemia, prolonged recovery, and increased mortality. Tranexamic acid (TXA), widely used in elective orthopedic and cardiac surgeries, has emerged as a potential intervention—but what is its role in trauma settings? This systematic review and meta-analysis examined nine randomized trials involving 879 patients, exploring the efficacy and safety of a single preoperative intravenous dose of TXA. Outcomes included total and intraoperative blood loss, hemoglobin levels, transfusion rates, and adverse events such as thromboembolism. Findings shed light on both benefits and limitations of TXA in this high-risk surgical population.
