Dr. Mueller discusses weight-bearing versus nonweight-bearing exercise for persons with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy
29 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and peripheral neuropathy (PN) were randomized into one of two 12 week exercise programs. Patients underwent either a weight-bearing (WB) program that consisted of exercises performed while standing up and walking, or into a non-weight-bearing (NWB) program consisting of exercises performed while sitting or lying down. Results indicated that patients in the WB group improved their 6-minute walk distance significantly and increased their average daily step count compared to the NWB group. The NWB group, however, achieved significantly better hemoglobin A1c values.
